Steel pipe piles and reinforced concrete pipe piles are the two most widely used foundations in port hydraulic structures. Both of them have their own characteristics, and can be selected according to the engineeringcharacteristics and construction needs.
(1) The form of pile foundation:
Steel pipe piles usually need a pair of forked piles to withstand horizontal loads. Reinforced concrete pipe piles can be directly loaded by their own bending capacity.
The adaptability of steel pipe pile is stronger than that of reinforced concrete pipe pile. The requirement of steel pipe pile to pile hammer, pile cushion and construction environment is lower than that of reinforced concrete pipe pile, and the sensitivity to the change of geological condition is also lower than that of reinforced concrete pipe pile. When necessary, steel pipe pile can become a remedial measure of reinforced concrete pipe pile. There are many unforeseen factors in the construction process of reinforced concrete pipe pile, and its determinacy is not as good as that of steel pipe pile. The steel pipe pile should be preferred for projects with poor geological conditions and high construction period.
(3) Late maintenance:
The steel pipe pile must be treated with antisepsis, and the anticorrosive effect is greatly influenced by the construction technology, the environment and the use condition. The reinforced concrete pipe pile is basically not used for anticorrosive treatment, and has good durability.

The cost of construction and maintenance of reinforced concrete pipe pile is much lower than that of steel pipe pile, and the economic benefit is remarkable.
